Convert between bytes, megabytes, gigabytes and more

About Digital Storage Conversion

Digital storage measures the capacity of data storage devices and file sizes. The fundamental unit is the bit (binary digit), which represents a single 0 or 1. Eight bits make one byte, which can represent a single character of text. This converter uses binary prefixes (powers of 1024) as is standard in computing.

Understanding digital storage units is essential when comparing storage devices, estimating download times, or managing disk space. A kilobyte (KB) is 1,024 bytes, a megabyte (MB) is 1,024 KB, and so on. A typical smartphone photo is 3-5 MB, a movie might be 1-4 GB, and modern hard drives commonly hold 1-4 TB.

At the larger end, petabytes and exabytes are used to describe data center capacities and global data volumes. It is estimated that humanity generates approximately 2.5 exabytes of data per day, highlighting the staggering scale of modern digital information.
