About Fuel Economy Conversion
Fuel economy measures how efficiently a vehicle uses fuel and is expressed differently around the world. In the United States, miles per gallon (mpg) is standard, while most of Europe uses liters per 100 kilometers (L/100km), and some countries including parts of Asia use kilometers per liter (km/L).
The key challenge with fuel economy conversion is that L/100km is an inverse measurement: a lower number means better efficiency, the opposite of mpg and km/L where higher is better. This makes direct factor-based conversion impossible, requiring special formulas instead. For example, to convert mpg to L/100km, you divide 235.215 by the mpg value.
Understanding fuel economy across different units is essential when comparing vehicles from different markets, planning road trips abroad, or evaluating the efficiency of rental cars in other countries.
