About Speed Conversion

Speed measures how quickly an object moves over a distance in a given time. The SI unit is meters per second (m/s), but in everyday life, kilometers per hour (km/h) is used in most countries while miles per hour (mph) is standard in the United States and United Kingdom for road speeds.

Knots (nautical miles per hour) are the standard speed measurement in aviation and maritime navigation. One knot equals approximately 1.151 mph or 1.852 km/h. This unit is preferred at sea and in the air because it relates directly to the nautical mile, which corresponds to one minute of latitude.

Common reference points: a comfortable walking speed is about 5 km/h (3.1 mph), highway speed limits range from 100-130 km/h (62-81 mph), and the speed of sound at sea level is approximately 343 m/s (1,235 km/h or 767 mph).
