About Wire Gauge Conversion
American Wire Gauge (AWG) is the standard wire sizing system in North America. Confusingly, higher AWG numbers mean thinner wire. AWG 10 ≈ 5.26 mm² is common for household circuits, while AWG 14 ≈ 2.08 mm² is used for lighting circuits.
The metric system uses cross-sectional area in mm². Our converter includes a comprehensive lookup table from AWG 0000 (4/0) through AWG 40, covering all common wire sizes.
